一、LingyinTemple
SituatedatthefoodofLingyinMountain,asidefromtheWestLake,LingyinTemple(TempleofInspiredSeclusion)isoneofthetenmostfamousancientBuddhisttemplesinChina.
FirstbuiltbyanIndianmonkHuiliin326ADduringtheEasternJindynasty(317-420AD),thetemplewasnamedLingyinTemple(TempleofInspiredSeclusion)foritsenvironmentisverybeautifulandsereneandsuitablefor"godsrestinseclusion".Initsprime,thistemple,containingover1300roomsand3000monks,usedtobealargemonasterywithascaleyoujustimagine.Duetowarandcalamity,thetemplehasexperiencedabout1700yearsofrepeatedcirclesofprosperityanddeclineuntilitslastrestorationintheQingdynasty(1644-1911).
Onthecompound’scentralaxlestandHallofHeavenlyKings,DaxiongbaodianHall(PreciousHalloftheGreatHero),PharmaceuticalMasterHallandGreatMercyHall.
二、HallofHeavenlyKings
Itisthefirsthallafterenteringthetemple.Atabletinscribedwith"cloudforestBuddhisttemple",pennedbyEmperorKangxi,whowasinspiredononeoccasionbythesightofthetempleinthemistandtrees,washungabovethedoor,producingasacredatmospherehere.Morenoticeableisacouplethungonthedoorreading:Letuswaitsittingonthethresholdofthetemple,foranotherpeakmayflyfromafar.Smilesappearwelcoming,forthebrookisgraduallywarminguptothespringtime.Whentouristsadmirethecouplet,theycan’thelpbutgrin.
InsidethehallisastatueoflaughingBuddhawhocan"endureeverythingunendurableintheworldandlaughateverylaughablepersonintheworld."FourheavenlykingsstandonbothsidesoftheBuddhaandWeituobehind.
三、DaxiongbaodianHall(GrandHall)
DaxiongbaodianHall(GrandHall)isthemainhallofLingyinTemple.Itis7roomswideand5roomsdeep,withonestory,doublelayereavesandpinnacleroof33.6metersinheight,famedasoneofChina’stallestone-storybuildings.AstatueofSakyamuni,carvedoutof24piecesofcamphorwood,stands24.8metershighinthehall.OnthebothsidesofSakyamunistand20saintsprotectingjusticeandonthebackwallsithis12disciplesservingasguards.Infrontofthehallaretwostonepagodasbuilt
duringtheNorthernSongdynasties(960-1279)with9storiesand8surfacesandsculpturedBuddhiststoriesonfourwalls.
Scatteredoutsideandinsidethetemplearenumerousrelicsleftfromancienttimes,inwhichPavilionofCoolBrookerectedinthemidTangdynasty,stonepagodaandstonestorageforBuddhistscripturesbuiltintheFivedynasties,PavilionofGreensfirstbuiltintheSouthernSongdynasty,thepagodaofHuilierectedintheMingdynasty(1368-1644)areespeciallyworthyofviewing.
ThetemplealsohousesvariousBuddhistliteratureandtreasuresincludingthescriptureswrittenonpattraleaves,theDiamondSutracopiedbyDongQichangintheMingdynasty,awoodcuteditionpublishedintheQingdynasty.
