TherearetwoapproachestoMountHua.[Chineseproverb:“ThereisoneroadandonlyoneroadtoMountHua,”meaningthatsometimesthehardwayistheonlyway.]Thewestentranceinvolves10kilometersofwalkingonaroadbeforeyoustartclimbing.Wewentwiththeeastentrance,wherethebusbringsyoutothebaseofacablecarthatgoesuptothe1500meterNorthPeak.OurplanwastowalkuptotheNorthPeak,thenclimbtothefourotherpeaksthenextdayandtakethecablecardown.
Westartedtheclimbintheearlyafternoon.Thepathconsistsofstonestepswithroughchainlinkhandrailsinthenarrowestareas(weworeourbicyclingglovesforhandprotection).Physically,itismorelikeclimbingthestepsofaskyscraperthantrailsathome.However,thetemperaturewasabout95degreesandtherewasnotmuchshade.Webroughtlotsofwater,includingsomebottlesthatwefrozeandsomeGatoradethatwegotatthefancydepartmentstoreindowntownXian.Thereareplentyofrefreshmentstandsalongthewaywhereyoucanbuybottledwater,theChineseequivalentofGatorade,andotherdrinksorsnacksatapremiumprice.

Theplanforthedaywastoclimbtheotherfourpeaks,butwereservedtherighttoshortentheroute.ThefirstpartwasasteepclimbtoMiddlePeak.AfterthelowNorthPeak,alltheothersareatroughly2000meters.TherewerecrowdsonthewaytoMiddlePeak–mostlyChinesehikersbutwedidseeafewotherwaiguo(foreigners)aswell.
WevisitedtwoTaoisttemplesenroutetoMiddlePeak.Eachonehadanaltarwithincenseandofferingsoffruit.Thefriendlymonksinvitedustosayaprayerortosendblessingstolovedones.Franacceptedtheirinvitation.Atthefirsttemple,shelitincensesticksandkneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarsayingasilentprayerforoursafejourneytothevarioussummitsofMountHua(theprayerwasanswered).Atthesecondtemple,shekneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarandsentsilentblessingstoseveralfriendswhoareexperiencingchallengingsituationsintheirlivesatpresent.Aftereachblessing,sheleanedforwardandthemonkstruckadrum.

WetookaroutethateventuallybroughtustothemainlinereturningdownfromMiddletoNorthPeak.Wewerehappytohaveascendedeachofthefivepeaks(petals)ofFlowerMountain.
Bycablecar(thelongestinAsia),itwasjust7minutesdowntotheparkentrance.Wecaughtashuttlebusintotown,thentransferredtoabusforXian.
Ourguidestoldusthatwehadwalkedupanddownatotalof4000stairs!Weweregladthatwedidnothavethisinformationwhenwestarted.Forthreedaysafterreturninghome,oursorelegmusclesinstructedustotaketheelevatortoourfifthfloorapartmentratherthanclimbingthestairs.
