这是美国影片《爱情故事》（1970年）的同名主题歌，由卡尔·西格曼作词，弗朗西斯·莱依作曲。这部电影传入中国后深受欢迎，主题音乐家喻户晓。《爱情故事》于1971年获"金球"奖。该主题歌曲贯穿全片，旋律优美动听，歌词真挚感人。
《爱情故事》的内容梗概如下：大银行家之子奥利佛与面包师之女詹妮弗相爱，遭到父亲的坚决反对。奥利佛情笃意深，与家庭脱离关系，毅然与詹妮弗结婚；靠打短工度日，生活清苦，但爱清甜蜜。詹妮弗放弃了自己喜爱的音乐事业，支持奥利佛攻读法律。奥利佛以优异的成绩受聘为律师，生活开始好转。奥利佛的父亲也要回心转意时，詹妮弗却患上了血癌。奥利佛悉心照料詹妮弗。最后，詹妮弗在奥利佛怀中安然告别人世。
《爱情故事》的情节也摆脱不了流行套路，影片在基本大团圆的情况下结束，在人类情感恢复和谐之之时给观众一个伤感却合理的结局。从一个侧面也告诉人们，对待爱情不应有门第之见，否则爱情悲剧便会迭出，人类美好情感遭到破坏。
《爱情故事》的同名主题歌的歌词十分感人，它告诉人们，伟大爱情的作用是多么无与伦比，其强大的威力能让任何事物、任何艰难险阻瞬间变得十分渺小，不足称道。男女的结合，爱神的降临，会赶走生活上的空虚，精神上的压抑，世界从此变得幸福而甜蜜。驰骋的想象，天使的歌声互相充盈着对方的心灵。无论何时、无论何地，只要爱相随，谁会感到寂寞？即使人的肉体可以化去，但人的灵魂不灭，真挚的爱情永恒。即使一人升入天堂，另一方仍会认为其存在，分分秒秒将其铝刻在心底。这就是真爱，它让你生生死死相爱，岁岁年年相守。
